About Revelation
Revelation is the sixty-sixth and final book of the Bible, written by the apostle John while exiled on the island of Patmos around AD 95-96 during the reign of the Roman emperor Domitian, and spanning 22 chapters. The only fully apocalyptic book in the New Testament, Revelation is simultaneously a letter to seven historical churches in Asia Minor, a prophecy of coming events, and an apocalypse (unveiling) of spiritual realities behind the visible world. It opens with the risen and glorified Christ walking among His churches and delivering specific messages of commendation and correction to each. The central vision concerns a heavenly throne room, a sealed scroll of history, the breaking of seven seals, seven trumpets, seven bowls of wrath, the great harlot Babylon, the beast and the false prophet, the return of Christ in glory, the millennium, the final judgment, and the magnificent vision of the new heaven and new earth and the New Jerusalem descending from heaven. Major themes include the absolute sovereignty of God and Christ over all of history, the call to faithful witness and patient endurance under persecution, the certain judgment of evil, the ultimate triumph of the Lamb, and the glorious eternal destiny of the redeemed. Key chapters include Revelation 1 (the vision of the glorified Christ), Revelation 4-5 (the heavenly throne room and the Lamb), Revelation 21-22 (the new creation). Famous verses include Revelation 21:4 -- He will wipe every tear from their eyes.
