You Quotes
Quotes that speak straight to you.

I like to focus on making the music sound simple and true, and very lush and full. I think music should take you to somewhere else where you have the space to contemplate or exercise your imagination. All the while you should be feeling real good, like when you have a delicious and decadent meal, macaroni and cheese or foie gras.

A perfect poem you can't pin down and say, 'This is exactly what it meant to me.' It's not a self-help manual.

I think that American women are further along than any other women in the world. But you can't have peace in a world in which some women or some men or some nations are at different stages of development. There is so much work to be done.

When you're young, when you've never done anything very much on your own, you imagine that it won't be so hard.

It may be an instinct, it is with me anyway, when you're presenting something to the world, to make it as beautiful as you can.

I learned really early on that I had to treat it as if it were a real job. And don't complain. Who do you think you are: you're nobody special; go to work.'

No one looks at a baby and says, 'You are going to be a great novelist, and you really need to start writing now.' Something in us says: 'This is what I must do.'

Writing is the place where I can do it all and get away with it. You can't do that in the theatre.

Some readers sort of suspect that you have another book that you didn't publish that has even more information in it. I think that readers sort of want to be taught something. They have this idea that there's a takeaway from a novel rather than just the being there, which I think is the great, great pleasure of reading.

I guess I cringe when the discussion leads to, rather than books and sentences and characters and the stuff that writers are supposed to be concerned with, how to have an online presence and how many followers you have on Twitter. That stuff always makes me uncomfortable.

George Hearn taught me that you learn that there are roles that are Tony roles and roles that are not.

Teachers want to teach you theory, and that's fine, but when it comes to rock and roll, you only need three chords. There's something comforting about that.

My children have gone to Catholic school... Part of their whole education is talking about the inner life and looking at your life, even though you're only 15 or 16 - thinking about your mortality, thinking about the value of your life, thinking about your obligations.

You've got to chop back the performance like a rose bush. That's when it's beautiful.
