Philippians Chapters - ASV Bible

Philippians, written from prison, is the New Testament's most joyful letter, overflowing with thanksgiving, contentment, and love despite Paul's confinement. Philippians Bible chapters contain the great Christ-hymn describing Jesus' humiliation and exaltation (2:5-11), Paul's declaration "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (4:13), his invitation to "rejoice in the Lord always" (4:4), and the call to let the peace of God guard our hearts through prayer and thanksgiving (4:6-7). The church at Philippi had a special place in Paul's heart — his first European congregation — and the warmth of this relationship saturates every chapter of this short but extraordinary letter.

About Philippians

Philippians is the fiftieth book of the Bible, written by the apostle Paul around AD 61-62 while imprisoned in Rome, and spanning 4 chapters. Written to the church at Philippi -- the first church Paul planted in Europe (Acts 16) -- this letter is often called the Epistle of Joy because the word joy or rejoice appears some 16 times in just four chapters, remarkable given Paul's circumstances in prison. Despite his imprisonment, Paul overflows with gratitude, affection, and encouragement for his beloved Philippian partners in the gospel, while also addressing a conflict between two church members (Euodia and Syntyche) and warning against legalistic and licentious false teachers. Major themes include joy as a settled confidence independent of circumstances, unity and humility modeled on Christ's self-emptying incarnation, contentment in all circumstances through Christ's strength, and the surpassing worth of knowing Christ above all earthly advantage. Key chapters include Philippians 2 (the Christ hymn -- the kenosis), Philippians 3 (Paul's resume counted as rubbish for Christ), and Philippians 4 (rejoicing, peace, and contentment). Famous verses include Philippians 4:13 -- I can do all this through him who gives me strength -- and Philippians 4:7 -- And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
